In the Beginning or The Fourth Day

Why, hello there! It's been three years since the last post, so here's something new -- er, to this blog anyway. The comic describes the creation of the world, as described in the book of Genesis.

 

I finished this drawing on Strathmore Bristol Board.

I digitally inked and gray-toned the work in Manga Studio Debut 4.0 on the Intuos 5 Tablet. Let me know what you think, okay?

Coloring

A while back, a few years ago actually, I had received a Wacom Bamboo Fun Tablet for Christmas. The software for whatever reason never worked with our computer. So when we recently got a new computer, I attempted again to install it. Failure, yet again. But without getting to much into all of the details, the tablet came with Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0. I never bothered to install it before, with already having so many troubles with the software, I just naturally figured it wouldn't work. But I got thinking about it earlier this week and decided to give it a try. Success! So I've been plugging away with it, learning the ins and outs of photoshop!



So I took one of my newer works, and tried out coloring it.



Over all, I am satisfied with the results... But I am a tad disappointed with the loss of the original line work. For example, his nose and mouth. Anyway, can't wait to test it out some more. If anyone has any tips to give about using photoshop -- I'm all ears.

I don't upload much work to the web these days. It's not in a blatant attempt to avoid posting, I just never get around to it. Thanks for visiting, comments and critiques are valued.

Recent Illustrations

The year was 2006. That was the year this all started. I was thirteen. I had no prior knowledge to being on the web. I was a very young and aspiring artist. Today, the year is 2011. I'm eighteen years old. I stand six feet tall. This year, I graduate from high school -- an my interest is as strong today is it was in '06. I hope to go to art school in a couple of years, and am really excited to make my way in this world as an artist. As amazing and as intimidating as that sounds.

Through it all, this weblog is and will remain my single greatest memory of my development in art. Granted, I'm still a young artist. So I can't reflect as greatly as I could in, say, another five years? But still, it's amazing to look back through all the years. All the various techniques learned and attempted. In penciling, inking, coloring, shading, anatomy, structure, perspective. All of the illustrations I've long forgotten. All the ones I remember being proud of. All of them. It's strange to look back though, when I'm at a time in my life where all I can do is look ahead.

Thanks to everyone for all the comments over the years. You're the ones I owe a lot to. For all the advice you've given. For the praise and criticism. And maybe greater than all, encouraging me to press on in my development art. You guys have all been great. And I'll never forget you.

Without this crazy little blog, I don't know if I could've ever gotten this far. And who knows, maybe in another five years I'll post again -- talking about my growth since this post.

Sorry for the lack of posting, guys. I have been drawing a lot. (..And writing.) The scanner is broken. So, I can't scan any drawings in. Also, I'm not really not on Blogger anymore. So, sorry for lack of posting.

Okay people, I didn't finish her hand, or her feet, because it's been SO hard!! (NOTE: I couldn't finish her right hand, because I ran put of space..) I've tried different angles, different styles, but still... nothing. *sigh* Anyhow, I will attempt to finish this drawing. Which is becoming a rarity for me. Which is why it's so important to me to finish. But, before I go and try to wrap it up, I'm going to go see what my buddy Steve thinks of it. Ask if he has some constructive criticism. Though there's nothing I could really change at this point. lol

Oh, and stay tuned for more... I have plenty of drawings that have been stacking up on me. I just need to scan them in.

Art Attack!!

Some more work for my faithful followers...

Okay, so lately... I've been experiencing just why body-sketching is so important... I guess it took me long enough, huh? Anyhow, I drew the above with a blue pencil. Kinda a new practice for me. And after I loaded this in, I realized it was too light -- so, I quickly ran a regular pencil over it.

I've realized something now, about faces, that I never realized before. And on that suspenseful note, I remind you to log back soon, as I reveal just what exactly I learned, and what I hope to do to change it.

Got some oval templates the other day, and couldn't wait to try it out. Hints, so many circles. Also, tell me what you think of the hand sketch... I kinda don't like it. Fingers look like melting cheese..
Rough sketching... Not too much to say.

The big one, is a picture I'm currently doing of Johnny Storm, The Human Torch! It's been a real learning experience though, playing with the flames rolling of his shoulder and head, etc. Hope to post the finished version as soon as I'm done.

This attempt at a dude flying, is actually an older drawing than the other above pics... But, I just wanted to post it anyways. And on a side note, my inspiration for this sketching was the anoucnment that Paul Levitz will return to the Legion of Super Heroes this spring! And, as if that wasn't exciting enough, rising star artist Yildiray Cinar is doing art! (I'm new to his work, but so far, I'm a fan!) I'm reading a book right now, preaching the importance of knowing the human anatomy. So, above are some attempts at the overall structure of the human head.

First post of 0'10... Oops, no wait... 2010? Yeah, right...


well, it's unfinished... But I like it. Actually, I learned something VERY interesting about this drawing. The 'runner' in the above pic, is drawn absolutely perfect. Not drawn perfect, I mean, his muscle's are in perfect alignment... Everything matches up. But sadly, that means I did it wrong, right? Wait. If I drew him perfect, how is he wrong? Nobody looks perfect when they're running. So, to his right, you'll find a proportionally accurate runner -- also crossing the finish line.

Okay, so I'd like to say that a resolution I made this New Year's was to start posting regularly, here on my blog. I'd like to say that. But I won't. Because that would be an empty promise I honestly can't keep. Finding the time to post is unbelievable!! But honestly, I am drawing close to everyday. (for now, anyways... lol)

Paint Christmas For Me

Here's a little something I made for the Holiday Season. Merry Christmas, all!!

Paint me a picture, puppet. One with snow abound and jolly aplenty of the Christmas' long ago, and the Christmas to be rendered. One with a pine tree, freshly cut and needles seemingly array, bringing about the renowned cheer of Christmas day.

Don't stop there, puppet. The picture isn't finished, yet.
Don't forget to paint the children aglow, writing letters simply addressed to the North Pole, and don't forget our old friend, St. Nicholas, checking his list not only once but twice, in preparation for the big day.

What's that, puppet? Oh yes, how could I have forgotten?!
The popcorn a'poppin', the stockings a'hung, the fire a'crack'a'ling, the children they hum. The presents are neatly placed, with ribbons and bows, the light from the tree creates a great glow. The candy canes are hung, numbered so few, ornaments and mistletoe, decorated just for you.

Be patient, puppet, we're almost through.
Carols and story's, being sung and read, second chances are given, hope revealed in His birth, the old year is goodbye'd, the new year is greeted. So Merry Christmas to you, and a Happy New Year, too.

Prudent Art?

When I visit a blog that hasn't been updated in quite some time... I generally start to worry about the posters 'personal' health. I just wanted you all to know, I am ALIVE. note: some of these these pics are drawn very lightly, so you might have to click to see better.

I know, it's horrible... But I started to work fastly, which created haste. Which in turn looks bad. Some people can make it work, however... COUGH, cough, Jeff Heerman, COUGH!

Penciling My Imagination

SisterBlog?

Hey guys, big news! I made yesterday, a sister-blog to comixHub. Introducing, Thought Conjunction! Click title, to visit. I made this site in hopes of becoming a better writer. Why am I interested in becoming a better writer? I can't even begin to tell you how many times I read a comic/book/anything, and think to myself, "Wow, they could have explained that a LOT better." Thus, I want to challenge myself to write and see if I can actually do any better. So, with my focus shifting towards writing -- what about drawing? Hey now, I'm not at all abandoning drawing! In fact, I hope that maybe my writing will encourage me to illustrate my stories.

So with that being said, hopefully I can start posting here more often! And also, I have another announcement coming up soon, so stay tuned for that. Thanks for reading and come back soon!

Up And At Them

Head for a head, and I don't know how to draw a body?

Well, the title says it all...I've focused so immensely on drawing the human head, I feel that any sort of ability I used to have on drawing the human body is fineto! That being said, does anybody know of some good books to help learn the human figure?
